Of Blood and Bone Chronicles of The One Book 2 Nora Roberts Books

Book 1 I found to be very dry and more of a "What you need to know" primer for the next book in the trilogy so I was prepared to find book 2 mediocre at best, mainly because the heroine was a teenager..boy, was I wrong. This one was overflowing with all the emotion missing from book 1....I cried my way through it and did I say WOW?? Nora hit a home run here.....can't imagine how book 3 can top this. And so begins the long, agonizing wait for the grand finale..Congratulations Nora-phenomenal!

Of Blood and Bone Chronicles of The One Book 2 Nora Roberts Books Reviews

I usually love NR and everything she writes but these trilogies are getting tedious. I feel like she’s done this story before. Adding an apocalypse doesn’t make it different from her other supernatural trilogies of late. Worst of all- I could read it just because it’s well-written and mindless- but a year passes before the next installment. By then I’ve forgotten the forgettable characters and relationships of the earlier installment. They do not stand alone well. If all three books came out within 3 months, it would be tolerable. This just feels like a cheat.
I am not usually one to pick up a multi-book series until it is complete, which allows me to binge-read it all the way through. Nora Roberts’ second book in the Chronicles of The One series fooled me with the word “sequel” at the top of the cover. There is another book coming, and I guess we will all have to wait for it.

Ms. Roberts did bring Book 2’s storyline to a close, avoiding a cliffhanger-like ending. The action and the constant danger in Book 1 takes a back seat to character development and setting up the story for an all-out war between the factions of black and white, good and evil. If you are one of the few who haven’t read Book 1 yet, my advice would be to start there. Although there are plenty of references back to the beginning of the story, you will not understand exactly who all the supporting and minor characters are, which will subtract from your enjoyment of what is an entertaining series.

Fallon Swift is the focus of this book. She is The One, the warrior of the prophecies that promise of her coming to lead the army of light against the forces of darkness. “Of Blood and Bone” leads us on a journey through her years of training, and allows readers a deep look into the person who will undoubtedly be at the forefront of Book 3.

This is not just another apocalyptic tale, although one might suspect this might be the case, what with the combination of emergent magic, declining civilization, and the resurrection of weapons of former wars. The author melds good storytelling and dialogue with descriptive passages that reveal much about the main characters.

While I am personally not happy with the fact that I have to wait until Ms. Roberts’ fertile imagination can produce Book 3, this is a series worth reading. It combines realism with the fantastic, giving us a strong glimpse into a world that might never come to pass. Five stars.
The first in the series, Year One, was absolutely riveting. It was reminiscent of Stephen King's The Stand, one of my all time favorites. It kept me enthralled from the beginning. This book, however, was not nearly as interesting as the first in the series, as it was obvious that the author was once again dragging out the story in order to write a trilogy. This story would be best told in one, longer novel, instead of a trilogy. The plot of book two was drab, and did not need 400 plus pages to lead us to what will ultimately be the finale in book three. I enjoy Ms. Roberts' stories and think that she is a pretty good writer, but I do find it irksome that every decent story must be turned into a trilogy. I am not privy to her finances, but I imagine at this point that she could write one magnificent story from start to finish, without breaking it down into a trilogy, and sell enough copies to earn her a fair amount of money. Stephen King seems to do well with this format (as do many others).
I won’t disagree with the one (1 star) review as we all are entitled to our opinions, most particularly about art in all of its many forms. I would, however, like to counter the suggestion/directive that Ms. Roberts exclusively write fiction that “makes sense”. I don’t understand this since a considerable part of her collection deals with the fantastical, such as witches and faeries. I will say that “Year One” (the first book in this series) was darker than Ms. Roberts’ usual work, but I quickly immersed myself in the story she was telling and realized that it, as with all her work, was well-written, descriptive and compelling. If you are on the fence, simply read the offered summary before committing as it properly gives a person a fine sense that “Of Blood and Bone” does not neatly fit in with Ms. Roberts’ usual “lighter” offerings, but to my way of thinking, it is nevertheless a great read.
