***Possibly some spoilery things*****A very interesting m/m version of a mix of Jane Eyre and other Gothic genre books of the period. I liked the pacing and the development of the characters, and the story was incredibly interesting.
Graham Cowrie is a man with a new identity as a tutor, his background forged, and fed on a diet of pulp novels (I'm not sure when exactly the term "pulp novel" was coined)--somewhat similar to the heroine of "Northanger Abbey"--is headed to Allinson Hall, a terrifying looking place with wings built out of period from each other (a perfect monsterish mish-mash and excellent for the enclosure as a character). Unlike "Northanger Abbey," however, this mansion does have some surprises in store.
Sir Richard Allinson, the father of the twins Graham is to tutor, and Graham have an instant attraction to one another, which Richard resists. The twins, Whit and Clive, prove a slippery pair, but Graham gradually wins them over. Their mother, Graham eventually discovers, killed herself, and Clive is the one who discovered her body in the tower, which is why he doesn't speak. But, did Lavinia really kill herself, or are there darker forces at work?
The secondary characters are well-drawn enough to convey their purposes, but I really liked Tom, the amazing artist who Graham takes it in his heart to give time to in the evenings to supply with materials and let him pursue his extraordinary talent.
Richard and Graham's relationship is an interesting one; Richard still suffering from the guilt that he was the one responsible for Lavinia's suicide. Graham may not have originally had the qualifications for being a tutor, but he does have the ability to bring a family together again and help solve the mystery of what is really going on at Allinson Hall.
I highly recommend this novel, especially to lovers of traditional Gothic fiction.

The Tutor edition by Bonnie Dee Romance eBooks Reviews
I have to admit the first part of the book felt a bit dragged and slow-paced and I didn’t really connect with Graham. All characters were kind of scattered (Graham thinking only about himself, Richard brooding, etc.) and the only ones I could actually relate to where Whit and Clive.
The second part was better and I ended up liking Graham. Richard was kind of… meh? I mean, he didn’t try to patch things up with his children until Graham tells him, it’s like he didn’t even see them or something. Don't know.
I actually found the mystery/spooky part quite classic and even sweet (yeah, a spooky-sweet story, that’s a first…), but it wasn’t bad. And about the romance, well, let’s just point out that it didn’t really seem the main focus of the book and I was ok with that.
To sum it up, it was an entertaining book, but it wasn’t fireworks-can’t-sleep-need-to-know-how-it-ends for me.
This book was absolutely wonderful! It was a Sherlock Holmes Mystery, infused with Francis Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden and dash of classic romance (with a gay twist of course). It's overall noir haunt feeling really moved the story right along, causing me to fly through the pages. Dee executed pacing perfectly! Never, did I find myself begging to rush a scene or feel as if I had been cheated by the lack of information. There were times when I felt (along with the main character) joy, sadness, frustration, excitement and even a bit of fear (for the characters and their difficult situations). The Tutor transcends the gap between being a book that focuses primarily on the main character being gay and being a book that just happened to have gay main characters. The story itself held strong. The fact that it also includes steamy M/M action is just an added bonus.
Way to go! I hope to read more from Bonnie Dee!
Set in Yorkshire England, 1893, Graham Cowrie arrives at Allison Hall to tutor Richard Allison's 9-year-old twin sons, Whitney and Clive. Graham, who lied on his resume and has no teaching experience, grew up in London's East End and has a backbone of steel. He overcame an abusive stepfather, acquired a hard-won education and strives to attain a better position in life.
Graham's unorthodox teaching methods win over Whit but Clive (who has not spoken since his mother's death) is tougher, and the boy's reclusive father is tougher yet. And of course, Allison Hall is dark, creepy and there's a cold presence in the old tower that leaves Graham feeling suicidal and depressed. And Tom, a young servant, draws pictures of intense darkness and evil clouds surrounding the estate.
This book takes the typical gothic romance story format and gives us a slowly burning attraction between Richard and Graham as well as an evil entity that has been haunting Allison Hall for generations. Without giving away too much more of the book, I loved how it took the typical gothic romance theme and added the M/M component.
