This is the second book in the Ladies of Caldwell County series. You can read this book without having read book 1, Sixty Acres and a Bride (Ladies of Caldwell County, Book 1), but it was nice to see familiar characters pop up occasionally. Molly and Bailey have grown up together and are smitten with each other. They're so smitten that they struggle with physical temptation. Bailey decides he will do right by Molly and find a job so that they can marry. Meanwhile, Molly's well-off parents are trying to marry her off to a man of means and Bailey does not fit into their plans. Then a rich dandy enters the picture and the situation becomes even worse. I really liked Bailey. Even though he battled with temptation, he wanted to do the right thing and to treat Molly with respect. He struggled with how people thought he was so wonderful when he knew how imperfect he really was. There were some humorous parts in the book and it was nice to see Rosa from book 1 and to learn more about Anne, the heroine in the next book, Caught in the Middle (Ladies of Caldwell County, Book 3). Honestly, it has been a while since I read book 1 so I did not remember much of Molly and Bailey from the previous book. I couldn't get a good feel for their relationship because I felt I was plopped right in the middle of it so I was not as invested in it since I never watched it develop. I had difficulty with liking Molly in the first half of the book. She is very spoiled and shallow at times. Her storyline with Edward, the rich dandy, really surprised me and not in a good way. I wasn't expecting it to unfold as it did. I think the author did a great job of showing how much pressure Molly was under from her parents and why she made the decisions she did but it was still hard to like her at times. I will say that she really matures a lot---spiritually, emotionally, and just as a person from her trials. Towards the end, you really feel for her and it is to the author's credit that she turned Molly's character around so well. The spiritual content in this book was wonderful, especially the river scene at the end. Overall, I thought the second half of the book was better but still a worthwhile read.Tags : Love in the Balance [Regina Jennings] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This is the second book in this series. The first book is called Sixty Acres and a Bride.
Molly is getting pressure from her family to marry well. She's in love with Bailey, but he doesn't measure up to her parent's expectations or basically hers. He's trying to find a job, but when Molly's father gets ill, the pressure becomes great and she's forced to make some tough decisions. She meets a dashing gentleman who tempts her with a different life. One where she can travel and save her family at the same time.
Bailey is trying to make himself worthy to court Molly. He knows that she loves him, but they just can't find the resources to make it happen. Both of these people are looking at themselves and finding what they see lacking. Bailey thinks he needs a job and more money. Molly feels forced to make decisions that will please others and she doesn't consider the consequences before acting.
This was a great book. For most of it, you think these two are never going to get a chance to be together despite their obvious love for each other. They go through some tough times that help them grow and realize who they are and what they really want. I was impressed how they came to own up to their flaws and use them to change and grow.
The third book in this series, Caught in the Middle, came out in April. It tells the story of Nicholas and Anne. Nicholas is Molly's brother. Both of these characters are seen in the other books, but their involvement is slight enough that reading these out of order won't affect your enjoyment of the story.
I enjoyed this charming, small town, historical romance. Love in the Balance is set in Texas in the late 1800’s, when women had few options and were often at the mercy of others. Although this is the second book in the series, I inadvertently read it prior to Book 1, Sixty Acres and a Bride. The only gap I noticed was that one or two characters, unknown to me, were briefly mentioned. In my opinion, this book can be read as a stand-alone novel, however, I will be going back and reading the first book.
Molly Lovelace, at first, appeared to me to be rather shallow and not really a very deep thinker. However, as the story moves along, it becomes evident that she is more or less, fulfilling the role in which her family has cast her. I love the way that she grows, both spiritually and as an independent woman, by the end of the book.
Baily Garner is an interesting hero, who is not always what he seems to those around him. His conflicts are mostly internal, as he strives to figure what to do in life. Even though Baily has many options and opportunities, he has little direction and is often confused.
I think Love in the Balance is a satisfying read and I’m very pleased with the way the story ends. I recommend this book to those who savor historical romance.
